Farewell 2010

Last Saturday, all our cubs were furiously writing away, busy filling up their log books for a year full of exciting activities. Many were proud to receive their proficiency badges and arrow badges, after having completed all the required tasks and activities.

Aunty Kat checking and signing off the log books

Then it was time to celebrate great friendships made and cemented during the year , over deee-licious yummy food .

(Sorry, before the photographer had a chance to grab her camera, all the food was almost gone! )

Great pals

Take care and have great fun during your holidays till we see each other again in 2011!

Our Parent Volunteers

Hi Cubs,
Did you wonder how and when our scout unit got started?
Ever wanted to find out more about Aunty Kat and Uncle John but was too shy to ask?
Well, here's the chance to satisfy your curiosity.
Read about it in this article that featured Aunty Kat and Uncle John.
Some of you are in the photo too - can you spot yourself?
To download the article, click here
The writeup is in Chinese though, so if you can't figure out some of the words, do ask your friend who is good in Chinese, your Chinese teacher or your parents.

And do study hard for your coming exams while we are not having our scout activities during the next few Saturdays. We'll have a great party after your exams... See you again on 6 Nov !

Kite Flying at Marina Barrage 2 Oct 2010

Our cubs gathered early this morning in school. Everyone was excited.
Yes! It was their Children's Day treat - an outing to the Marina Barrage to fly their kites :)
All came ready with their colourful kites, as well as the ones they made last week.
Our special guest, Mr Goh, returned with his huge bag of kites again, this time to show our cubs how to fly their kites.

Our special guest Mr Goh, showing how to get our kites ready for "take-off"

Look! The kite I made is flying high in the sky!

Creative kite made from plastic bag can also soar as high

Our cubs listening intently to our tour guide Jonathan on a tour of the Sustainable Singapore Gallery

Happy faces say it all

And if you want to fly your kites with Mr Goh again, you can look for him during weekends at the Pasir Ris beach, near the big playground. He is usually there between 5 pm to 7pm whenever he is free.

Kite making & Investiture 25 Sep

Hi Cubs
Did you go somewhere and try to fly the kite that you made? Did it fly high into the sky?
Can you recall the 5 important ingredients that Mr Goh taught us, that go into a great kite flying experience?
They are :
1. Having the 'right' amount of Wind
2. Having a good kite (not necessarily an expensive one, but one that is well made)
3. Tying the bridle correctly
4. Marriage of the string to the kite
5. An experienced kite flyer

So remember these well when we go to Marina Barrage to fly our kites next Saturday!

Our special guest, Mr Goh, sharing with our cubs the finer points of kite making and kite flying

Our cubs all eager to make their very own kite

5 new cubs had their investiture ceremony on 25 Sep 2010.
We welcome on board Sean, Samuel, Sabrina, Hui Shan and Evangeline.
Welcome to our latest members!

World Conservation & Gardening 18 Sep

Hi Cubs
Have you been diligently watering the seeds you planted?
Have seedlings sprouted out yet?
Isn't fun to watch seeds grow and marvel at the wonders of nature?
You learn about Life Cycles of Plants during your Science lessons, so last Saturday, you put what you learnt into practice :-)

We also learn about the three R's of the environment
- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle - to help protect our Earth.
Recycling is an excellent way of saving energy and conserving the environment.
We should reuse and recycle whatever we can.

Our seeds in recycled bottles and containers - Reuse, Recycle, Reduce

Little shoots growing taller each day !
Grow plants to save the Earth.

When seedlings reach 2 to 3 inches tall and have developed their first set of true leaves, it's time to transplant them into larger containers with more soil , so that they can grow even taller. Who knows, if you take good care of your plants, you may get to harvest some corn, peanuts or lady fingers one day!

Our Close Encounters at Sungei Buloh

Sungei Buloh, one of the last remaining wetlands of Singapore, a treasure trove of beautiful wildlife and unusual plants. Last Saturday, our cubs had a wonderful lesson in this unique living classroom and were priviliged to enjoy close encounters with the special inhabitants at Sungei Buloh

This relative of a prehistoric monster came to welcome us

How to walk through the reserve without getting our feet wet ? On the Mangrove Boardwalk of course!

Look who came when we fed them?

Happy faces after the exhilarating experience

Visit to Kheng Chiu Happy Lodge

They sang, they clapped and they smiled.
Such was the heartwarming response when our cubs and parent volunteers visited the elderly folks at Kheng Chiu Happy Lodge on 14 Aug .

Our cubs had each contributed a dollar of their savings towards the purchase of gifts for the residents at the home.

They carefully wrapped all the presents into a little goodies bag.

The cubs designed a greeting card each and presented the card and gifts to the residents with a shy but warm smile.

Some of our cubs also chatted with the residents and entertained them with stories of their scouting adventures.

It was indeed an enriching experience for our cubs, as they reflect on how they should care for their parents and grandparents in future.

Nimble fingers

It was a wet and rainy morning and hopes of having fun & games in the sun were dashed :(
But "Be Prepared" is our scout motto.
So out came the "magic bag of tricks" and
Viola! look what a good time we still managed to have :)

First we learnt how to fold our own planes
Then we were ready to launch our own private jets ...

Aren't I Cool? I've got my very own supersonic!

And Aunty Chooi Pin and other Aunties taught me how to sew..

and I learnt how to thread a needle
-- it was So very hard!

But it was fun sewing and we made these pretty patchwork designs

and looked at what we made too!

Cubs and Ladders

Uncle John and Uncle Richard taught the cubs how to build a ladder today, using the knots they have been taught. And looks like they really had fun climbing it up and down....as you can see for yourself...
